Scott practices intellectual property law and is registered to practice as a patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. His depth of knowledge and expertise enables him to counsel clients from numerous industries on patent, trademark, and copyright matters. Creating a proactive global protection strategy that creates value, aligning his clients' strategic business plans with their intellectual property portfolio, and saving time and money are what Scott does best. Scott embraces being in the middle of the action, working with clients while developing an intellectual property protection strategy, securing his clients' intellectual assets, managing their portfolios, and looking toward the future to anticipate where and how they might expand and positively leverage their intellectual property rights.

In addition to his patent and complex agreement expertise, Scott has extensive experience with trademark matters and strategic brand management.  Scott represents and counsels brand holders in the management of their global trademark portfolios and the selection, clearance, and registration of new brands, and has experience in all areas of trademark prosecution, including preparing trademark clearance and availability opinions, preparing and prosecuting domestic and international trademark applications, and handling appeals before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. He also represents clients involved in domestic and foreign trademark oppositions and cancelation proceedings.

Before joining Kagan Binder, Scott was the Vice President and Chief Intellectual Property counsel for a highly diversified global consumer products company.  In that role, he oversaw a wide range of global intellectual property matters, from the identification and acquisition of intellectual property rights to the exploitation and protection of those rights.  Prior to working in-house, Scott practiced law in the large, general practice firm arena, where he focused on intellectual property, antitrust and trade regulation, litigation, bankruptcy, and legal matters before various administrative agencies.

Scott has frequently been asked to address issues related to Intellectual Asset Management and Strategy at conferences by bar associations and other organizations globally.

Scott holds a Bachelor’s degrees in Chemistry and Biology from Marquette University and received his J.D. cum laude from the University of Wisconsin Law School, Madison, Wisconsin.

Scott is admitted to practice in Minnesota, California and Wisconsin, and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
